The Golden Ruby Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Golden Ruby') is a small, compact, deciduous shrub that belongs to the Berberidaceae family. This plant is a hybrid that was developed in Japan by crossing Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea 'Crimson Pygmy' with Berberis thunbergii 'Aurea'. The Golden Ruby Barberry is known for its attractive foliage, which is a vibrant reddish-orange color in the spring and then deepens to a darker red accented with golden edges as the leaves mature. As winter approaches, the foliage undergoes another colorful transformation, turning bright orange, almost brick-red before resting for the winter.

This compact, deciduous shrub typically grows to a height and width of 2 to 3 feet when mature, and it has a dense, bushy growth habit. Its thorny stems make it a good plant for creating natural barriers or hedges. The Golden Ruby Barberry is low-maintenance and can grow in a variety of soil types, but it prefers well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It can also tolerate some shade, as well as drought and heat.

The Golden Ruby Barberry is hardy in USDA zones 4-8, but it can be vigorous and cold-hardy enough to live into zone 3 with winter protection. The leaves of this shrub are small, oval-shaped, and have a slightly serrated edge. Seedlings are rarely produced.

Due to its short and spiky, thorny, barb-wire-like stems, the Golden Ruby Barberry is not typically nibbled on by small animals, making it an excellent choice for creating a protective barrier, particularly around first-floor windows.

Botanically, this plant is known as Berberis thunbergii 'Goruzam' Golden Ruby, and its pronunciation is BUR-bur-is thun-BER-jee-eye. It belongs to the Berberidaceae plant family.

Overall, the Golden Ruby Barberry is a vibrant, low-maintenance, and versatile shrub that can add both color and protection to your landscape.
